Joe Hamm’s daffodil garden in Washington County is the greatest collection of blooming daffodils I’ve ever seen. Joe’s goal is all about preservation and as part of his work is offering some of his rare varieties for sale. I order some every year and have them planted in my vegetable garden, so I can enjoy their beauty each spring.
Here’s the letter from Joe about what’s available and how to get some bulbs- The list of bulbs and order form, along with a video about Joe and his garden is below.
August 2024
Hello friends
I figure I have 41 years of being obsessed with Daffodils. This is our 16th year of thinning out and selling the excess bulbs. The bulb sale supports our not-for-profit work in maintaining the Daffodil Hortus and American Daffodil Society (ADS) approved Display Garden located at 99 Maple Road, Washington PA 15301. The Gardens are OPEN to the Public, “FREE”. The public calls to see what is in bloom. Many make several visits to experience the “daffodil seasons”. The Gardens are now on the “MUST SEE’’ List.
Enclosed is a price list and order form. The offerings are listed in alphabetical order in groups: Historic (registered prior to 1940), Classic (registered between 1940-1969), and Modern (registered 1970 and later). Photos of most of the cultivars can be viewed on ADS’s daffseek.org. It is a wealth of information!
Bulbs are priced on the rarity and propagation rate of the cultivar. Bulbs are available on a first-come-first-serve basis, but we also try to assure that you will receive at least one bulb of your selection Please note that a double asterisk before a daffodil name on the sales list means that quantities are limited and most likely will sell out quickly.
A bulb is either double-nosed or the equivalent in rounds. Some items listed may not be available due to problems discovered only after bulbs are processed. We endeavor to supply true-to-name cultivars, but sometimes, not often, mix-ups can occur.
Submit your order either through the mail or by email. DO NOT SEND PAYMENT WITH YOUR ORDER FORM. We will enclose an invoice with your bulb order and include a $5.00 packaging fee plus postage costs.
For those of you who live locally, we can mail your order or you can call us after September 1st to schedule a time for on-site pick up at 99 Maple Road. We will also sell bulbs this year at the Covered Bridge Festival at Mingo Park on Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd. You are also welcome to come and shop on-site for bulbs by appointment only after Wednesday September 24th.
