Doug's favorite gifts for gardeners
Here's my long list of gift ideas for gardeners. We are really easy to buy for!I talked about it on The Organic Gardener Radio Hour on December 18th, 2022. This list is not only good for the holiday, it's great any time you need to find something special for your favorite gardener.GIFT CERTIFICATES-You can't go wrong with a gift certificate to the closest garden center or nursery. How about one from a seed company. It's not the most personal gift, but gardeners love them. Don't forget about getting an electronic version if you're short on time.INDOOR BULBS AMARYLLIS AND PAPERWHITES- There's nothing easier than these indoor bulbs. They can be bought already blooming, or to be planted in a pot. Both can be coaxed back into bloom the next year, making them a long time gift.ROSEMARY TREE- Lots of local garden centers sell rosemary plants trimmed to look like a Christmas tree. The trick to keeping the rosemary going all winter is to keep it moist, but not soaking.CHRISTMAS CACTUS- These are easy to grow and will often times bloom a couple of times a year.DRAMM COLORPOINT PRUNERS- I've fallen in love with these pruners. They are sharp, easy to carry and colorful. Those colors help me find them in the garden!SLOGGERS GARDEN SHOES- I've been wearing these waterproof garden shoes, which slip on and off for over a decade. They are so comfortable, I wear them out just about everywhere.SUN HAT- It's important for gardeners to have protection from the sun. There are lots of nice looking, functional hats out on the market.KNEELER- I could not plant all those bulbs without my kneeler.HARVEST BASKET- There are some really nice looking versions at your favorite garden center.FANCY WATERING CAN- Every gardener can use another watering can.NICE PLANT MARKERS- This is a great gift for gardeners, we can always use these.SEEDS- Your local nursery will have lots of seeds out for sale. Find something you'd love to try and then give the seeds to your favorite gardener.POLLINATOR HOME OR BEE HOUSE- One of the most important things that gardeners can do to help pollinators is to offer them habitat to live and breed. A bee house is perfect for them.BIRD FEEDER- Gardeners who attract birds create a foraging route for them, which continues into the spring. Hungry parents will hunt down hundreds of insects to feed their young.INDOOR MUSHROOM GROWING KIT- Fun, fun, fun!GARDEN STATUE/BENCH/ROCK/ANGEL/CHERUB/STEPPING STONES- You can't go wrong with any of these garden decorations. Maybe something classic, or trashy for gardeners like me!RAIN GAUGE- It's good to know how much rain came the night before in the garden.COOL SUCCULENTS/HOUSEPLANTS- They are beautiful, easy to grow and clean the air.A GARDEN JOURNAL- I've been keeping one since the 1980's. It's a great help to the garden.
