Donate extra vegetable seedlings to Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
For nearly 20 years I've participated in a program called Plant a Row for the Hungry. It encourages gardeners to plant a little extra in their gardens and then pass along the harvest to their closest food pantry.
It's more important than ever for gardeners to help the hungry as so many people are out of work.
One way to do that is to also donate your extra seedlings, so that clients of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and other food pantries can give them to people for their own gardens.
Here's the instructions on how to donate from my friend Lori Diefenbacher at the Food Bank
Here is the best way to donate seedlings :
- From our webpage: Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Website (pittsburghfoodbank.org)
- Click on "Get Help" at the top of our home page
- click on "Locator"
- Type in address and/or zip code
- A list of agencies in your designated search radius will appear containing the agency contact information and the dates and times of distributions are also listed
- Individuals can call the agency directly or call me and I can call the agency and find out if they have the capacity to distribute seedlings.
This direct donation to one of the partner agencies in our network makes the most sense for seedling donations as well as garden donations (Community Harvest). If you know of someone who has a larger number of seedlings, let me know and I can find out through our Network Development team what larger agency would be interested.
