Hi Joyce,

Free shipping for you, send me a letter if you haven't yet. I don't think I'm booked for the plant sale yet, but I might be there, I'll let you know.

Best,
Doug

Hi Doug. I'm only a beginner in gardening and I'm so glad I saw you on KDKA this morning. I like your blog and with your caution about April frosts, I am acting accordingly, and NOT going 'full speed ahead' as I thought I could. In your blog from April '11 I saw you were at the Rachel Carson Homestead's plant sale and was wondering if they will have one this year, and will you be there? I'm going to watch out for a chance to meet you. Also I want to send for your Gardener's Journal and wonder if the shipping is still free or should I add a couple bucks? THANKS for all your advice.

Cindy, you might need a bigger baffle, check out some of the things online that people are using.
Hot pepper works too.

Good Luck,

Doug

One pest you didn't mention, is raccoons. I've had to find a way to detract them. We have a squirrel baffle, but those smart raccoons have found a way around it!

I will try the Caspacin pepper sprinkled in to try to detract them.

Thanks,
Cindy Bly

Oakleaf hydrangeas are a favorite of mine and native just east of me, Doug. The flowers are remarkable on the bush, but also super easy to use in arrangements, their parchment blooms reviving summer memories in winter. I cut and gather the heads when they start to dry, tie the ends with twine and hang them in my garage till the leaves of the shrub drop. That's my cue to bring them in and enjoy! cc:

I always loved my butterfly bush and apparently the stinkbugs do too!
I found several on the leaves, a friend of mine told me she has them too.
I plan to try one of the traps to catch them, hope it works.

Wandering Jew and different kinds of Ferns grow well in shade. These plants are usually easy to grow and don't require much care.

You're probably going to have to make the trip to Hahn in the North Hills, call first to be sure the stuff is there. 412-635-7475.
Did you try Chapon's, Jim Jenkins or Trax?
